새누리당, 자유한국당으로 당명 교체+문재인, 민주당 예비후보 등록, 공식 대권행보 시작
The ruling Saenuri Party has officially adopted a new name -- the Liberty Korea Party.
Ji Myung-kil zooms in on the conservative bloc's effort to give itself a fresh start amid the factional infighting that's led lawmakers to walk away... and the corruption scandal surrounding the president.
The ruling Saenuri Party now has a new name -- the Liberty Korea Party -- and is expected to adopt a new logo, party rules and platform... advocating the values of Korea's Constitution and national security.
This is the fourth time the party has changed its name since its establishment in 1990.
It started out as the Democratic Liberal Party back in 1990, then became the Grand National Party in 1997 and changed its name to Saenuri Party in February 2012.
This time, the party is seeking to refurbish its image, which has been tarnished by the corruption scandal centering around President Park Geun-hye.
Since parliament passed a motion to impeach President Park in early December... the ruling party has been embroiled in an internal feud among lawmakers close to the president and those who aren't.
This resulted in at least thirty lawmakers leaving to create the splinter conservative Bareun Party.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court is currently reviewing the legitimacy of the parliamentary impeachment motion against President Park.
"Both the ruling and opposition parties vowed on Monday to accept the Constitutional Court's verdict on the impeachment motion,.. regardless of the result."
The court has said a ruling is possible by the middle of next month.
If the motion is upheld, Korea will hold a presidential election within 60 days of the ruling, spurring candidates into action.
Moon Jae-in,... the former chief of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea and the current presidential frontrunner,... registered his candidacy for his party's primaries on Monday.
Moon's spokesperson said a formal declaration of his presidential bid will follow later.
