(5 Jun 2014) Newly elected Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko, the former world heavyweight boxing champion, presided on Thursday over his first council meeting.
Dozens of supporters cheered Klitschko as he arrived at city hall in Kiev.
Klitschko, a leader of the protest movement that sent Ukraine's former president Victor Yanukovich fleeing earlier this year, said his aim is to make the citizens of Kiev happy with the work of the newly elected authorities.
"We need the help of our citizens," Klitschko said during a speech in front of the city council's newly elected lawmakers.
"I can guarantee that our team will report to citizens every step we make. But I can't promise you there will be paradise in Kiev tomorrow," he added.
Klitschko was one of the most popular opposition figures during anti-government protests in Kiev last year and had ambitions to become the next president.
But he decided to withdraw and publicly expressed his support during the presidential campaign for billionaire candy magnate Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine's newly elected president.
