Type 1 diabetes happens when the immune system attacks the beta cells in your pancreas. But when it comes to how and why beta cells are destroyed, or what triggers this – we still don’t have all the answers.
Professor Sarah Richardson is studying a rare collection of pancreas samples to help piece together the puzzle. In this lecture, she explains how this new understanding could lead us to ways of preventing or curing type 1 diabetes in the future.
This is an edited version of the RD Lawrence Lecture presented at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2021.
