This is the head and saxophone solo from Kenny Garrett's modern jazz song 2 Down & 1 Across, released in 1997. This is the forty-sixth instalment of our inspiration series, which aims to provide short clips of jazz recordings to keep you inspired throughout your journey in jazz tuition.
This is a brilliant, modern solo by alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett. I love his use of chord substitutions throughout, which gives a dramatic, passionate tension and a hectic atmosphere. There's also a lovely moment where he uses simple rhythmic phrases repeated in the lower register of the saxophone, which really reminds of the playing of John Coltrane.
