Venice Carnival (Carnevale di Venezia) transforms San Marco Square (Piazza San Marco) into a huge open-air theater with colorful costumes and dresses modeled after seventeenth-century Venetian dresses. The Carnival of Venice, Italy 2024 started on January 27th. According with the annual tradition, people wear masks and costumes in the historic city. Visitors from all over the world come to enjoy the show and magic atmosphere of the Carnival of Venice.
Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy, is extremely beautiful and one of the most famous in the world. Piazza San Marco in the heart of Venice is the largest square and the only “piazza” in Venice. The other squares in Venice are called “piazzales” or “campos”. St. Mark's Square was established during the ninth century, but adopted its current form and size (180 m long and 70 m wide) in 1177.
St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco) located on the eastern end of Saint Mark's Square, is the most important tourist attraction in the square. The basilica was built in its original form in 829 and was consecrated in 832. The present structure is the third church, begun probably in 1063 combining a mix of architectural styles from Middle-Byzantine, Romanesque, to Islamic influences and also Gothic elements which were later incorporated. In 1807 Saint Mark’s Basilica became the city’s cathedral, and since then, it is the centre of religious life in Venice.
The bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica (Campanile di San Marco) is the tallest building in Venice, standing 98.6 m tall, dates from 1515 in its present form.
The Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) was originally a fortified castle founded between the tenth and eleventh centuries. The palace was rebuilt between 1172 and 1178, when it was used as a fortress and prison. This impressive building combines different architectural styles, including Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance.
The Clock Tower (Torre dell’ Orologio) is an early Renaissance building on the north side of the Piazza San Marco. The tower contains the clock, both them dating from the last decade of the 15th century. The clock was placed to be visible from the waters of the lagoon. Two bronze figures representing Moors strike the hour, and during Ascension week and Epiphany, statues of the Three Wise Men and an angel emerge from the clock tower to strike the hour.
Along the southside of the square, Museo Correr houses rich and varied collections that reflect the Venetian culture, history and art.
Venice, also known as the “The Floating City” or “City of Canals” is one of Italy's most picturesque cities and a very popular destination for travel. With its winding canals and beautiful bridges, its striking architecture, secret gardens and incredibly romantic places, Venice has a lot to offer beyond all the tourist attractions known all over the world. Founded in the 5th century and spread over 118 small islands, the famous Italian City of Venice is one of the most visited cities in Italy. Venice is a city in northeastern Italy, built on a group of small islands, separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. It is a major Italian port to the Adriatic Sea and the capital of both the Provincia di Venezia and the Regione di Veneto. Venice is unique environmentally, architecturally, and historically and therefore, the lagoon and a part of the city are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was styled la Serenissima (“the most serene”) in the medieval Europe, when it was the greatest seaport and the commercial and cultural link to Asia. One of the world’s oldest tourist and cultural centres, Venice is renowned not only for its beauty but also for its Venetian glass produced in the Island of Murano and the lace produced in the Island of Burano.
