Andrew Peace wines has always been a family affair. From humble beginnings in the 1960s as a small vineyard on the banks of the Murray river, to building a winery in 1995, to now being one of the countries most successful wine operations! Using not only grapes grown on site and with other estate vineyards, but also utilising a selection of local growers, 'AP' Wines releases a great range of styles and varieties every year.
One of the more interesting wines is the Zweigelt. Reconnecting with Austrian native Georg Weinwurm, who had worked vintage with Andrew a decade or so ago, they imported some cuttings of red grape Zweigelt from Georg's vineyards in northern Austria. After several years of strict quarantine in Australia, the seeds were finally planted, and in turn have now produced one of the very first Zweigelt wines in Australia. This is representative of the innovation and excitement that this winery generates, and the wine itself is a great standard bearer for the quality of the wines.
Not much Zweigelt found in Australia....nor anywhere else to be honest, outside its home of Austria. Which makes this delicious wine an oddity and a surprise. Very fresh, with fruit-forward aromas of bright red cherry, raspberry, and a hint of choc/coffee from the oak. It is zesty and light, with fine tannins and a touch of green pepper on the finish.
