Thompson entered the event ranked a career-high No 40 in the world, and is set to rise as high as No 32 after winning the decider. The 29-year-old saw off the fourth-seeded Ruud in the final having previously beaten top seed and world No 6 Alexander Zverev in the semi-final. After the match Thompson said: 'I spent so many hours on the court this week. In the quarter-final I could have been double bagelled, I could have been losing 6-0, 6-0 and now I’m about to lift the trophy, so I think it’s still a miracle'.
