Irony is something that happens when what you see and what is actually going on are opposites. That might sound a little funny at first, but after this video you should understand the three types of irony very well.

Hello everyone, Mr. D here with a brand-new video. Usually we would be learning about the English language here by looking at words and grammar, but this video goes a little bit further into the artistic side of language, or more specifically one of the many literary devices.

A literary device is something you use when you really want to make a point in your writing. They help us to add some extra emotion and depth to our language use, and are very important in literature. Like we said before. Irony is when what is happening, and what is supposed to be happening are contrasting. This usually has a funny effect. We can find irony in pictures, books, movies, and in real life. There are three types of irony, they are situational irony; verbal irony; and dramatic irony.

Situational irony occurs when the opposite happens of what you think is going to happen. An example of this could be a dog sitting under a sign which reads “no dogs”, or the guy that has been defending you in Among Us actually being the imposter. It’s called situational irony because the irony occurs in the situation.

This leads us to verbal irony which is when the irony occurs in what is being said. Verbal irony is when what is said, and what is happening doesn’t really agree with each other. An example could be you telling a friend on a rainy day that the weather is nice. This is not to be confused with sarcasm which is verbal irony with the intent of being mean.

Our final type of irony is dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows something which the characters in a story do not. This is very easy to spot in movies and TV shows because there are many moments when we know something which the characters don’t know. This can be as simple as a character looking for their glasses when we know its actually on their heads, or as complex as the plot of Othello.
