A collaboration between a mechanical engineer and Egyptologist at Swansea University has opened up a whole new window into the past.
Professor Richard Johnston - whose Materials Research Centre is opposite the Egypt Centre - was having a coffee with his colleague Dr Carolyn Graves-Brown when he suggested using an X-ray scanner to reveal what's inside the ancient animal mummies held by the university. The X-ray microtomography machine, which is similar to a medical CT scanner, generates 3D images at high resolutions. This means it is the perfect tool to analyse the 2,000 year-old remains of snake, bird and cat mummies, showcasing previously unseen detail, without destroying the mummy and giving an insight into how they were killed and the rituals of their embalming.
Professor Johnston and his team are now applying these techniques to the field of biomimicry, studying structures from nature that have evolved over millions of years, which can be replicated in engineering.
