Although they can be infuriatingly nimble and difficult to contain, flying-fox feet are true marvels of nature.
Not only employed as very effective landing gear, flying-foxes use their feet to assist in climbing, to scratch, groom and pick their teeth using those impressive toenails and most importantly, to hang on to large pieces of fruit!
With five toes on each foot, flying-fox feet posses a locking mechanism that ensures a flying-fox maintains a firm grip on its perch.
To release this grip, the bat must flap its wings and gain altitude which relieves the pressure of their body weight allowing the tendons to relax and the bat to fly away from its branch.
