Most people take a shower at least once a day. But what would happen if you just stopped?
First and foremost you will stink and people will definitely think you are gross and may not want to be near you because of your odor and germs. Health wise, you will be more prone to getting infections and can have skin problems.
If you’ve ever missed a shower for more than a couple days, you’ve probably already begun to see, feel, and maybe even smell the affects. Your hair begins to get more oily, you may start to smell a bit, and you might start to itch in places. So just imagine continuing your non-bathing routine and how you would feel after a week or even a month.
On average a human body is covered with over 20 sq ft of skin and we have over 2 million sweat glands. Since we have so many sweat glands, our body is always continually producing sweat even if we may not notice or feel it. Sweat doesn’t make you smell as it has no odor but our body is also covered with bacteria. When sweat and bacteria mix it is what causes a foul smelling odor.
When you don’t bathe the dead skin, sweat, bacteria and dirt that your body has produced and accumulated throughout the day stays with you. It creates a layer of grime on your skin which can cause you to itch from the lack of exfoliation. It can also clog your pores, which in turn can cause blackheads and acne. Another noticeable side effect is your hair can become more oily. Due to the buildup of product and sweat your hair can obtain an oily sheen. This can cause scalp irritation and itchiness.
Since you’re not removing anything via showering, you’ll begin to have an overgrowth of yeast, bacteria, and fungus. If you get a cut, scratch or scrape on your skin, the bacteria is more susceptible to getting into your bloodstream and causing infections.
In general, you don’t really need to shower everyday. It’s recommended that you should shower at least every other day or even 2-3x a week depending on your lifestyle and level of activity. Although it’s good to remove the dirt, sweat, oil and bacteria from your body, some bacteria and oil is actually useful. Our body does contain good bacteria which helps fight off the bad bacteria. We also produce natural oils which help keep our skin moisturized and offer a layer of protection on our skin.
Itt’s important to shower every few days but it’s also important to not overshower. Not only is it important for your own personal hygiene but you’ll also help out others by not producing foul smelling odors around people.
So that answers the question, what would happen if you stopped showering. That took some thinking!
