AMNESTY REPORT ON HOUTHIS
Amnesty International has published a report recording a surge in arbitrary arrests, detentions and abductions of members of Al Islah ruling party carried out by Iranian-backed Houthis and former President Ali Abdullah Saleh loyalist. According to Said Bouhmedouha, Deputy Director of Amnesty International's Middle East and North Africa programme, the attacks appeared to "be either a deliberate attack on civilians who were simply trying to flee the spiraling violence in Aden or an indiscriminate attack." The report comes as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced talks between warring Yemeni parties to end nearly two months of Saudi-led air strikes.
ISIS SEIZES PALMYRA
According to London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, ISIS has seized the town of Palmyra on the outskirts of the city of Tadmur a 2,000 year old UNESCO site, after Syrian government troops withdrew from the region following clashes. Despite coalition airstrikes, ISIS has made significant gains in Syria and Iraq.
NUCLEAR REACTOR APPROVAL
Japan's nuclear regulator has approved Ikata nuclear power station in southwestern Japan meets safety standards to resume operation. This comes four years after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The Shinzo Abe government hopes to restart all nuclear plants as to energy problem that affects the country's economy. The plan has been opposed by a majority of Japanese citizens and many environmental groups.
SOE AFTER OIL SPILL
A pipeline ruptured along California’s coastline near Santa Barbara. Authorities have increased their initial estimate of leaked oil from 79 thousand litres to a significantly higher 3 hundred 97 thousand litres. Federal authorities have begun to investigate the spill which has threatened wildlife as it spreads across 15 kilometres of the ocean. Following the spill at Refugio State Beach, California Governor Jerry Brown has announced a state of emergency for Santa Barbara County.
