When a lady presents with symptoms, gynecologists will do physical examination which is called pelvic examination.With gloved fingers and lubricants the gynecologist examines the cervical area of the lady to see if there is any growth or any other abnormality.

If cervical cancer is suspected, or if there is any early changes in the cervix then certain investigations need to be done.The most important investigation for the early detection of cervical cancer is pap smear test.Pap smear is a very simple procedure which can be done in the clinic.In this test, small amount of scraping is taken using a wooden spatula from the cervix.This scraping is sent to the pathologist for examination under the microscope.Based on the microscopic examination conclusions are made, whether the lady has cervical cancer or not or whether the lady has any cervical changes which can lead on to cervical cancer.

If the lady has cervical cancer then she needs to undergo additional modalities like a CT scan of the abdomen.
