Unit 10: Mass Society & Chocolate Culture in the 20th Century
In this unit, we will explore how chocolate began to be mass produced during the 20th century. We will investigate how chocolate becomes part of the phenomenon called "Mass Society" epitomized by the massive growth of advertising and the democratization of leisure. During the 20th century, we shall see the growth of massive chocolate-producing corporations such as Hershey's Chocolate. All of these developments were made possible by the developments introduced by the so-called "second" industrial revolution of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
