🪄 MAGIC OOBLECK SCIENCE EXPERIMENT 🪄
Experiment 1
🧪Step 1 - Mixing a ration of 2:1 add 3 tables spoons of water into a bowl and 6 tablespoons of cornstarch.
🧪Step 2 - Stir with a spoon, if the mixture is still thin add more starch. The mixture should feel stiff as you stiff.
When you reduce the force and speed of the stirring you will feel the mixture relax. When you pull the spoon along the mixture will tear open but as soon as you stop it will turn into a fluid!
Experiment 2
🧪Step 1 - Pour some of the mixture into your hand
🧪Step 2 - Squeeze your fist together and watch it turn dough-like, if you keep applying pressure you will be able to continue rolling and shaping it, however once you release the pressure it will take on a fluid characteristic and run off the palm of your hand!
⚗️The science
Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid, these are materials affected by temperature, pressure, time or shear stress. We understand this as rheology and viscosity.
This could be described as shear-thickening as when the stress and speed applied when mixing is high it makes the material thicker (high viscosity) and opposite when less force and rate is applied which gives it that liquid characteristic.
Water is considered a Newtonian fluid as it remains proportionally constant regardless of the stress and rate. So if you dip your hand in water or powerbomb into it, it will behave the same. This is also true for petrol, glycerol and hydrogen gas.
British Scientist Issac Newton (1643-1727) discovered this phenomenon and so these fluids are known as Newtonian Fluids.
Non-Newtonian fluids behave like both liquids and solids. Other materials such as ketchup, blood, toothpaste and shampoo are non-newtonian too.
