Lion Country Safari opened in 1967, in rural Palm Beach County just west of West Palm Beach. At the time it was the first drive through safari park in the United States and introduced a new concept to animal lovers, The Cageless Zoo. Lion Country Safari was originally developed by a group of South African and British entrepreneurs who wanted to bring the experience of an African game park, then and now an expensive and time-consuming trip, to South Florida families who would otherwise not be able to experience an African safari.
Lion Country Safari - West Palm Beach Today, Lion Country Safari features over 900 animals including lions, giraffe, zebras, ostrich and rhinos. The preserve is comprised of seven sections: Las Pampas (Tapir, Alapaca and Rhea), the Ruaha National Park (Impala, Kudu and Ostrich), the Kalahari Bushveldt (Nile Lechwe and Oryx), the Gir Forest (Asiatic Water Buffalo, Nilgai and Blackbuck), the Rongosa Reserve (African Lion), the Serengeti Plains (Common Eland, Wildebeest, Common Waterbuck and Ankole Cattle – Watusi) and the Hwange National Park (Southern White Rhinoceros, Common Zebra, Jackson’s Hartebeest, Chimpanzee, White-Handed Gibbon and Giraffe).
