A significant number of bridges rely on the deep foundational support of drilled shaft footings to withstand repetitive heavy loads long term. Bridge design engineers use innovative design tools, including application of strut-and-tie modeling, to maximize the strength of these, and other reinforced concrete bridge components. This project has produced a database of large-scale drilled shaft footings, as well as proposed 3D strut-and-tie modeling guidelines. Implementation of this work will contribute to the continued safe, consistent design and detailing of drilled shaft footings throughout Texas.
