The Samurai warrior class symbolized feudal Japan, valuing loyalty and courage. They fortified internally from 1635 until the Meiji era's 19th-century reforms, which ended Samurai privileges. Saigo Takamori, known as the Last Samurai, led the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877 against these changes, epitomizing Samurai ideals until his death. The rebellion, fueled by discontent over westernization and social reforms, ultimately failed due to traditional combat methods, inadequate weapons, and underestimating government forces. Takamori's defeat marked the Samurai class's end.
