Since a few days, an Great Northern Loon (Gavia immer) has been observed on the Grevelingendam. Yesterday and today I visited the dam in search of this greatest among the divers. The imposing water bird showed itself both times in the sluice (or what is left of it) at the beginning of the Strandweg. It often hunts just below the sheet pile. Sometimes the Great Northern Loon swims just outside the second row of buoys. And sometimes it just isn't there for a while, but rarely for long. This morning we arrived and the Great Northern Loon swam 'outside' to swim 'in' again after about five minutes. If you keep calm, teh Great Northern Loon will come surprisingly close. Do not speak too loudly, because although the bird is by no means shy, it does not appreciate loud voices, I saw during one of my visits: then the Great Northern Loon slowly but surely swims 'outside'.
