While there were no specific guidelines, the concept behind creating an animation is to create movement. Based off the essay Death of a Moth by Virginia Woolf, which describes in detail the short life of a moth, my studio pulls from themes highlighted in Death of a Moth. I aim to capture the idea Woolf described in her essay; that a moth, despite its size seems to carry great amounts of life inside its tiny body. And even with this life, the insignificance of the moth’s life is almost pitiful. So, when the moth does die, the essay describes it as a defeat and succumbing to death. While there was no description of flowers in the essay, this was my own take on the life of the moth growing into physical form. What stood out to me the most about this passage though was the intense and eloquent language and detail Woolf used to describe this scene. This was particularly grabbing as an artist because it helped to formulate an image that stuck in my mind. At the start of the project I experimented with different types of ink pens and pencils on thin paper. But this did not work, and I then decided to use trace so that I could see the previous slide and capture the movement more accurately.
