G'day guys! Still here in iso-life. These are our planter boxes made just over the weekend. Hope you like our vid!
We used our own measurements based on the space of our yard and the pallet we were able to obtain. Every pallet will be different, so you can use this plan to make it work for you.
We obtained the wood for free so saved a ton of money, plus repurposing wood is environmentally friendly (yay!).
How did we obtain the wood for free you ask? We drove to a nearby hardware store that supplies specialised machinery to other businesses and asked nicely for some of their pallets. The tradie was super friendly and helped us heaps. He pointed out that this pallet was heat treated and safe to use, especially for growing plants in :)
Total cost for these planter boxes was $26.90 --- only because we wanted to use gold timber screws (mostly so it can withstand the outdoor weather and moisture, but also gold looked awesome).
We saved a heap of money as all the other tools used, such as a nail punch kit, were already in Dave's tool box.
Tools we used:
1. wood pallet
2. wood reclaiming tools such as nail punch kit, hammer, and a cold chisel
(you'll see in the vid we didn't have a pry bar, but we worked around it)
3. measuring tape, ruler / square ruler (we also didn't have a square, so made do with what we had)
4. circular saw
5. sander
5. all purpose wood filler (we used Bull Glue) this is to fill in any nail holes
(I didn't want to allow any rust to get to the soil)
6. wood glue
7. timber screws 70mm (deep enough to drill through the thickness of the wood panels and posts) --- 32 screws used for the box
8. timer screws 40mm ---12 screws used to install support bars inside the box
9. jigsaw
10. and a drill.. with drills bits
Wood measurements: total panel sizes were 90x40x50cm (LxWxH)
(actually the total width came to 46cm once the long panels were attached as the wood was 30mm thick)
50cm high posts x 4
90cm wide sides x 2
40cm wide sides x 2
some spare wood for base support bars about 1.6m cut into 4 pieces according
and spare wood panels for the base -- with the posts cut out (we measured inside the box to figure out the length and width of the base)
Tools we used that can be alternated if you don't already own these tools:
1. circular saw and jigsaw --- use a hand saw
2. omit the sander --- reclaimed wood looks great unsanded
3. screws and drill --- use hammer and nails
4. omit wood glue --- we wanted to be a bit extra
5. omit wood filler --- if you don't mind exposed nails, or if you managed to remove all the nails from your pallet then you won't need this :)
This planter box plan was inspired by Cottage Life planter box tutorial
One thing I learned building these was that it doesn't have to be perfect. Reclaimed wood for a planter box doesn't have to be perfect to the mm.
