A new monument to Harriet Tubman was unveiled in Newark, NJ, at the same site where a Christopher Columbus statue once stood.
Per Reuters, the monument, which is named 'Shadow of a Face,' was deliberately designed to stand at eye-level, to make Tubman's legacy more 'accessible' to the viewer.
'Right here at eye level where we can connect to her is the personal story. The human story of Harriet Tubman,' said the monument's creator, Nina Cooke John. 'When we connect to our heroes as people, we can better be inspired by them to act. We don't feel like, 'oh, you know, they are the superheroes,' but regular people.'
