Lt Col Victor Banjo was a Nigerian soldier. He was arrested by the Aguiyi Ironsi military government on suspicion of taking part in the 15 January 1966 coup that consumed the lives of the Prime Minister of Nigeria, premiers of the Northern and Western regions, top civilian and military officers. He was kept in prison in the Eastern region and became part of the Biafran Army when the Nigerian Civil War broke out. He led the Liberation Army in the western front of the Biafran struggle to capture the Midwest Region.
Banjo and Immanuel Ifeajuna and two others were charged by Biafran authorities for sabotaging the war effort. They pleaded not guilty. They were executed sometime in September 1967 after a Biafran military tribunal found them guilty.
In this interview, Dele Banjo, the first son of Victor Banjo tells his father’s story.
