Save MONEY On TRIM + MOULDINGS This Way!! (Cut + Buy Shorter Trim/Casings/Mouldings At Lumberyards!)
A lot of people get confused by the trim cut station at Lowes and Home Depot. Can you cut trim and mouldings shorter and buy less?! The answer is yes...sometimes. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will explain how it works!
THE TRIM CUT STATION is a portable stand near the trim and mouldings section that comes equipped with a cut table, a fine finish saw, and compartments for excess cutoff.
The idea here is that you can cut eligible trim pieces to shorter sizes and only pay for the parts you need. But which trim pieces are eligible?!
Most stores categorize trim and mouldings by two designations: SOLD BY PIECE and SOLD BY LINEAR FOOT.
Trim items that are sold by the piece CANNOT be cut to shorter lengths and bought for less! They have to be purchased full price--though you can still cut them to transport them. (These are often marked with an "ea" symbol on the sticker.)
Trim items that are sold by the linear CAN be cut into shorter pieces, and you only have to pay for the part you're taking. Some stores have length minimums, like 3' or 4'--but you can purchase just these smaller lengths. (Linear foot trim and mouldings are usually marked with an "lf" on the sticker.)
Just be careful using the trim cut station! Use small strokes of the fine finish saw to cut the piece. And be sure to take a section that has a product sticker on it to the registers. This will make it easier for the cashier to ring it up.
This is one great way to save money on trim and mouldings at the lumberyard. Only get as much as you need! It's a great way to handle repairs where you're only splicing in small replacement pieces.
Thanks for watching!
