(23 May 1978) Zairean President Mobutu arrives in Paris to attend the French-African summit meeting. He arrives at the same time that the western news media, relying on eyewitness accounts of the rebel invasion on the Zairean town of Kolwezi, were accusing Zairean government troops of having joined the insurgents in the massacre of Europeans. The latest death toll as a result of the massacre now stands at more than two hundred. many of those killed were women and children.
