GORAL wurde im Dorf Ždiar in der Niederen Tatra gegründet, existiert mit Unterbrechungen seit 1925 und gilt als eines der bekanntesten Folkloreensembles in der Slowakei.

Die Folklore der Region Ždiar spiegelt den Lebensstil wider, der durch die raue alpine Umgebung geprägt ist. Folkloristische Ausdrucksformen spielen eine bedeutende Rolle bei den wichtigsten Ereignissen im Leben der Dorfbewohner, wie der Geburt eines Kindes, Taufe, Volljährigkeit, Hochzeit, Beerdigung sowie bei der täglichen Arbeit zu Hause, auf dem Feld oder im Wald. Bis heute werden in dieser Region verschiedene Hochzeits-, Palmsonntags-, Oster- und Weihnachtsrituale praktiziert.

In seinen Programmen versucht GORAL, viele verschiedene lokale Bräuche und Rituale rund um Hochzeiten, Feiertage, Arbeit usw. zu bewahren und zu fördern. Tänzer, Musiker und Sänger des Ensembles präsentieren ihre reichen Traditionen und den einzigartigen Charakter von Ždiar durch Tänze, Lieder und Kleidung bei nationalen Festivals und im Ausland.

GORAL was founded in the village of Ždiar in the Low Tatras, has existed intermittently since 1925 and is considered one of the most famous folklore ensembles in Slovakia.

The folklore of the Ždiar region reflects the lifestyle shaped by the harsh alpine environment. Folklore expressions play a significant role in the most important events in the lives of villagers, such as the birth of a child, baptism, coming of age, wedding, funeral, as well as in everyday work at home, in the field or in the forest. To this day, various wedding, Palm Sunday, Easter and Christmas rituals are practiced in this region.

In its programs, GORAL tries to preserve and promote many different local customs and rituals surrounding weddings, holidays, work, etc. Dancers, musicians and singers of the ensemble present their rich traditions and the unique character of Ždiar through dances, songs and clothing at national festivals and abroad.
