Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday it launched barrages of ballistic missiles against the base of "terrorists" in Syria and Israel’s intelligence service Mossad in Erbil, Iraq’s Kurdistan Region in response to recent anti-Iran "terror" attacks.
The strike in Erbil killed at least four civilians.
Hundreds of protestors gathered in front of the UN base in Erbil to condemn Iranian strikes.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’s al-Sudani denounced the Iranian attack as "aggressive act" that would undermine the strong bilateral relations.
Iraq recalled its ambassador from Tehran for consultations and summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires in Baghdad in protest over the strike.
The prime minister of Kurdistan Region called the strikes "unjustifiable" and "cowardly" during the Davos summit in Switzerland on the same day.
Iran’s strikes came after the Islamic State group claimed responsibility earlier this month for two suicide bombings targeting a commemoration for an Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, who was slain in a 2020 U.S. drone strike.
The attack killed at least 84 people and wounded an additional 284.
