TOKYO (CNN) -- The chief executive of Tokyo Electric Power Co. apologized Wednesday for the wide range of damage caused by the crisis at the company's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. CEO Tsunehisa Katsumata told reporters the company was doing its best to contain the situation at the six-reactor facility, where workers have been struggling to stave off a meltdown since a March 11 earthquake and tsunami knocked out cooling systems. Katsumata said the company is improving conditions for workers at the plant and has created a resting place for hundreds of workers in a gym at the nearby Fukushima Daini nuclear plant. Earlier Wednesday, the company confirmed that its president, Masataka Shimizu, had been hospitalized due to "fatigue and stress."
