Neon Tetra Vs Cardinal Tetra - What's The Best Fish For A Beginner Aquarium?
Appearance: I discuss the visual differences between Neon Tetras and Cardinal Tetras. Neon Tetras have a white belly, while Cardinal Tetras sport a red belly. Neons typically reach 1.2 inches, and Cardinals are slightly larger at 1.4 inches. Both fish add vibrant colors to a planted tank, with their red and blue hues standing out against the greenery.
Tank Size: I share my experiences keeping both species in my 40-gallon tank. Both species prefer leisurely exploring rather than schooling. I discuss general recommendations for minimum tank sizes—15 gallons for Neons and 12 gallons for Cardinals. Larger tanks provide more space for swimming and exploration, resulting in happier and healthier fish.
Stocking: I address the common advice of keeping a minimum of six tetras. Initially, I had 10 Neon Tetras and 15 Cardinal Tetras, but four of my Neons died. I recommend smaller groups for smaller tanks (10-12 gallons) and larger groups for bigger tanks. Both species prefer the bottom third of the tank, so consider tank mates that occupy different levels of the water column.
Water Parameters: I compare the temperature preferences of both species. Neon Tetras thrive in water temperatures between 70-77°F, while Cardinal Tetras prefer slightly warmer water between 73-84°F. I keep my tank at 75°F to accommodate both. Both species can tolerate a pH range from 4.0 to 7.5, with wild-caught fish preferring lower pH. Maintaining a fully cycled tank with zero ammonia and nitrites and low nitrates is crucial for both species.
Habitat Requirements: Both species are native to South America, preferring slow-flowing forest streams with leaf litter and botanicals that lower pH and release tannins. I replicate these conditions in my aquarium with rocks, fallen branches, and plenty of plants. My Neons stay out in the open while my Cardinals swim both in the open and among the plants.
Behavior: Both species are peaceful and suitable for community tanks. My male Neons occasionally chase each other to establish breeding rights, but they ignore other tank mates. Cardinals, still juveniles in my tank, might exhibit similar behavior as they mature. Neither species consistently schools or shoals, with Cardinals showing a tendency to shoal when the lights turn blue, unlike Neons.
Tank Mates: Both species are compatible with a variety of peaceful fish. In my tank, they coexist with pearl gourami, honey gourami, harlequin rasboras, chili rasboras, guppies, corydoras, a Siamese algae eater, cherry shrimp, and amano shrimp without issues. They are also considered shrimp-safe, though they might snack on baby shrimp. Selecting compatible tank mates ensures a harmonious environment.
Feeding: These omnivorous fish prefer high-protein foods. I primarily use Fluval Bug Bites, supplemented with daphnia, cyclops, and bloodworms. Both species prefer sinking granules over flake food, feeding from the bottom third of the water column. I advise removing uneaten food after 10-15 minutes to prevent overfeeding and maintaining water quality.
Hardiness: Neon Tetras are generally considered weaker than Cardinals. I lost more Neons than Cardinals, suggesting that Cardinals might be hardier. However, hardiness can vary depending on the source of the fish. Ensuring proper quarantine and tank conditions can help mitigate health issues.
Cost and Availability: Neon Tetras are more common and typically cheaper than Cardinals. However, due to the higher mortality rate of Neons, the overall cost might be similar. Investing in healthier, hardier fish can save money and stress in the long run.
