선고후 자유한국당 사과
The court’s ruling today to uphold the impeachment of President Park... puts the nation's politics at a critical crossroad.
Korea now has to elect a new president within 60 days, and politicians on all sides of the political aisle have no time to waste.
But first, let’s hear the reactions from the politicians.
For that, we first go over to our Park Ji-won standing by at the National Assembly.
Ji-won, it must be almost an emergency situation for the ruling party. How are they holding up?
Daeun. Now I'm here at the main hall of the National Assembly,... where the Liberty Korea Party,... which still counts former President Park as a member and therefore was the ruling party up until this morning,... has just begun a general meeting of all its lawmakers,... to discuss the situation.
Earlier in the day,... the conservative party's leadership had gathered at their headquarters to watch the court's ruling on TV.
And soon after the verdict came out, the party's interim leader In Myung-jin came to the briefing room,... where he said the party humbly accepts the result... and respects the court's authority... and its decision.
He also apologized for disappointing the public... and for failing to protect the nation's pride,... as the party bears a great deal of responsibility for the failure of the Park administration.
He said the Liberty Korea Party is no longer the ruling party, and that it will focus on reforming itself.
The interim leader also vowed to do his best to bring stability in this unprecedented situation, amid threats from both in and outside of the country.
Now the attention is now on how the party will reform. The impeachment of the president will deal a huge blow to the conservative party... with a presidential election now just 60 days away at most.
I will bring you more updates in the next newscast.
Back to you, Daeun.
With former UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who was touted as the best possible candidate for the ruling party, now out of the picture, Korea’s ruling party must be facing perhaps their biggest challenge ever.
Thank you Ji-won for that.
