1) Where are you from and what are you doing?
I am from Chile, I am 19, and I am in my second year of university, I am studying business. I took the TOEFL test because I am planning to do an exchange program in Australia.
2) Did you take the TOEFL at home or in the test center?
I took the TOEFL Home Edition because the test centers in Chile are currently closed.
3) What was your TOEFL Home Edition experience like?
First, I had to get a lot of information on how to take the TOEFL at home because there are many specific requirements regarding the computer, the internet and so on. I watched many videos from other people explaining their experience and talking about what kind of equipment you need for the test.
4) How did you interact with your proctor?
I was supposed to write in the chat box and the proctor told me that if there were any problems, I should talk to him and make signals with my hands.
5) How did you manage to erase your notes?
I used an eraser. I was really glad I was allowed to use it because otherwise my hand would have been full of ink. Before taking the TOEFL test I practiced erasing my notes. When I practiced for TOEFL Listening I took notes during the audio and then erased them quickly shortly before the next task.
6) How did you prepare to get a high TOEFL score?
I already knew that I had the level, but I realized that the TOEFL has a specific test format. The first time I took it my score was really low because I did not know what they expected. I practiced a lot although I did not have much time because I had to study a lot for my exams at university. I had a schedule for all the tasks: one week I practiced writing, the other speaking and so on.
7) Was there a task on the TOEFL that you found really hard?
It is not that I found TOEFL Speaking really hard but when I was talking I felt like I could not express myself even though I had practiced. There is not much time in TOEFL Speaking and I tried to find synonyms and other ways to explain things but it was hard to do it so quickly.
8) Which TOEFL task was the easiest for you?
I think it was TOEFL Listening. When I was practicing for TOEFL Listening I felt it was harder so I had high expectations when I started the test. But when I was listening to the audio I did not feel it was that hard.
9) What is your advice for somebody who struggles with TOEFL Listening?
My advice would be to practice a lot, especially because TOEFL Listening is more related to university subjects and so you have to use more formal information.
10) How did you feel immediately after the TOEFL?
It was a huge relief. Since I had to take so many exams for university, I had not focused on the day where I was supposed to take my TOEFL. The day before the test I started panicking because I needed to get the points. After I had taken the TOEFL I thought “Ok, now I am done. I do not want to see any more textbooks, listen to the audio, nothing” :D.
11) How many days did you have to wait for your TOEFL scores?
I had to wait for 6 days.
