Which stocks get promoted? These are typically very small companies. They aren’t well known and no one trades them. So the company pays for promoters to spread the word and lure in investors.
While some pump and dumps are illegal, there’s nothing illegal about a company trying to promote its stock … to an extent. It all comes down to the details. (Tune in to hear Michael explain the difference.)
The key thing with a promoted stock is it's all about supply and demand. Maybe one trader owns millions of shares of this stock. So this trader pays someone to pump this stock up … then sells into that promotion.
When that trader dumps the shares, that creates massive supply. If the stock is sinking because nobody’s buying and there’s an excess supply, the stock will drop. It’s pointless to pay for promotion unless you’re gonna sell.
So how does this play out for traders? It can create a great opportunity for short sellers. With a liquid stock creating real volume and a lot of selling pressure — if someone wants to sell, they can.
But you gotta be smart about it. You always want to be on the same side as the smarter traders in the game. Trade against the weaker, newbie traders. Who would buy a stock because they get a fancy brochure in the mail? Inexperienced traders. Maybe they foolishly believe in the stock or think it’s a scam they can profit from — either way, they buy.
If you’re shorting this stock, you’re on the same side as the people manipulating it. You’re selling with them and buying those shares back after the stock drops … And if the trade goes right, you collect the difference.
It sounds way easier than it is. But remember any strategy takes practice and experience. Make a plan for every single play. And always cut losses quickly when a trade doesn’t go as planned.
