A controversial land reclamation project is underway in Addu atoll, part of Maldives’ southernmost atoll, in order to develop housing, commercial buildings and luxury resorts.
Addu atoll, the site of the land reclamation project, is known for its one-of-a-kind reef structures and holds UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status since 2020.
Environmental activists say the government approved project will “effectively destroy” the biodiversity of the region. The Maldives archipelago is among the lowest lying nations in the world. Due to its geography, it already faces an existential threat due to rising sea levels caused by global climate change.
