Firefighters often face scenarios that challenge their endurance, physical strength and mental toughness, which is why training and fitness are critical to their routines.
To ensure safety and operational effectiveness across the Henrico County Division of Fire, firefighters regularly participate in health screenings and rigorous training exercises. Some take it further by encouraging their peers to push their abilities even higher.
“When the call does come in, we don’t know the severity of that call,” Lt. Scott McClelland said. In other words, there’s no such thing as overpreparing. That's why McClelland and his C-shift mates from Firehouse 8 designed a training program that re-creates some of the physical and cognitive strains that firefighter can experience during an emergency response. The program, based at the division's training facility off Woodman Road, is voluntary and available to all Henrico firefighters.
"If we improve our fitness and wellness, we are better able to serve the community, we're better able to react to things that we encounter in the field [and] we're better able to do our job," Fire Chief Jackson Baynard said.
