Yi-Fu Tuan, a massively significant scholar in the discipline, died at the age of 91 on August 10, 2022, in Madison, Wisconsin. Tuan was a key figure in what became known as humanistic geography and in the field of cultural geography more generally. He was instrumental in asking geographers to pay attention to what it is to be a sensing, feeling, thinking human when researching and writing about space and place. His influence extended well beyond geography. The historical and public intellectual, Simon Schama called him “one of the most remarkable and creative forces in the intellectual life of our time.”
The memorial session held during AAG's 2023 annual meeting provided an opportunity for geographers to honor his life and contributions to geography and beyond. The special session included this short video made with scholars who could not be in Denver, as well as a live hybrid discussion between friends, colleagues, and supervisees.
