This commercial was part of the controversial 1971 National Airlines advertising campaign featuring the airline's stewardesses with the sexual innuendo of "Fly Me" The campaign was a clear “sex sells” example that many airlines, excluding Pan Am, used in the 1960s and 1970s. The innuendo-laden campaign, which also received criticism from the airline's flight attendants and beyond, cost National a small fortune—they spent over $9 million a year on the ads—but their sales increased. The National Organization for Women objected to the ads, calling them sexist, saying that they presented flight attendants as a “flying meat market” and invited passengers to make sexual advances. Nevertheless, the “Fly Me” series raised the carrier’s profile and won a handful of advertising awards.
Pan Am bought National Airlines in 1980.
