The Dell PowerEdge R630 is an enterprise level 1U server with a powerful punch. We will review how to install and configure memory properly inside your R630 server. For starters, the R630 is part of the impressive Dell 13th Generation family and is the next gen to the very popular Dell PowerEdge R620 server. Dell R630’s run on 2 x Intel E5-2600 V3 or V4 series CPUs which is an LGA2011-3 processor socket. In total, there are 24 DIMM slots backed by DDR4 memory architecture. This is the first generation of DDR4 servers from Dell.

You can use two types of memory when configuring your R630 server: ECC Registered (RDIMM) or Load Reduced (LRDIMM). With LRDIMMs you can reach a higher overall capacity compared to RDIMMs. The max configuration is 768GB via (24 x 32GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz ECC Registered Server Memory. The max configuration is 1.5TB via (24 x 64GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-L 2666MHz Load Reduced Server Memory.

Each processor controls 12 memory slots. There are 4 Memory Channels per processor. Equating to 3 DIMM slots per Memory Channel. Dell has labeled and color coded each DIMM slot to help properly load your memory upgrades. You always want to install at the start of the memory channel. Each memory channel starts with white followed by black and then green. The proper configuration for 2 CPUs would be 8, 16 or 24 DIMMs to maintain a proper load balance across the memory channels. In this video, we will discuss in more depth how to actually load the DIMMs inside your PowerEdge R630 server.
