STORYLINE:
The New York International Auto Show got underway on Wednesday in New York, with a vast expanse of chrome and steel stretched out over two floors at a city convention centre.
German automaker BMW AG, whose US business rose more than seven percent in 2004, introduced two all-new 3 Series sedans on Wednesday, smaller relatives of the 5 and 7 series the company hopes will maintain its sales momentum.
The luxury carmaker also used the New York International Auto Show for the North American debut of its refreshed high-end 7 Series.
Both lines of cars are scheduled to go on sale in May as 2006 models.
Pricing for the 3 Series starts at roughly 31,000 US dollars, the 7 Series at 71,195.
Tom Purves, chairman of BMW's North American arm, said the two lines will compliment what has been an impressive run for BMW in the intensely competitive US market.
For the first two months of 2005, BMW's US sales were up 21 percent from a year ago, even as General Motors Corporation and Ford Motor Company struggled despite a slew of new vehicles.
BMW's US market share stood at 1.5 percent at the end of February, up from 1.3 percent a year ago.
Purves also said the new 3 series, though a luxury car, will be friendlier to the environment and to people's wallets when they go to the petrol station.
Among the cars unveiled on Wednesday was the Lexus GS 450h gas-electric hybrid luxury sedan.
