With the publication of NATO’s Strategic Concept and the 2022 Madrid Summit, and also with a view to the 2023 Vilnius Summit, the Alliance has taken a decisive step forward towards its core tasks, in particular deterrence and collective defence. Russia’s war on Ukraine has seen to it that NATO must become steadfast and resilient in the face of further escalation, but the Strategic Concept also underlines the fact that the Alliance needs to gear up for an era of strategic competition.
