Guanajuato is known to be a student town. The vibe definitely seems much younger than San Miguel. It’s more grungy and rugged with lots of cantinas and student bars. There isn’t a color scheme like there is in San Miguel so the City is much more colorful and vibrant. The streets are also cobblestone and very windy with makes for amazing photography
Guanajuato holds events such as the the Guanajuato International Film Festival and the Cervantino Festival that attracts thousands of visitors from throughout Mexico and around the world!
It was a mining town known for its silver mining and the birthplace of famed muralist Diego Rivera!
Flooding: The first bar we went to is called La Inundación which means the flood. It was one of the first places I visited when I came to Guanajuato. In 1905 there was a major flood that killed over 1000 people. All over town there are signs that indicate how high the water levels were.
The tunnel system of Guanajuato were built to prevent flooding. It’s like a whole different City down there! With street signs and bus stops and footpaths. I blew me away when I first visited. And I still love driving through them every time we visit.
We’re not going to go but it’s also known for its museum of mummies , even Tim Burton went. I’m to scared to go.. 😅
