Open for the morning newscast on Scripps' CBS affiliate serving the Hampton Roads region of southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. Cities covered include Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, and Newport News. Recorded on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Today, WTKR rolled out a new open style, replacing the standard Scripps opening. I do not know if this design was in-house and will be exclusive to WTKR, or if this was created by Scripps' hub and could be rolled out to other stations in the future. There's already a couple of other newer open styles other Scripps stations are using (mainly those that use the "neighborhood news" format which WTKR isn't doing as of now).
Thankfully, they kept the same themes from the Stephen Arnold-produced Scripps group music package. These cuts were originally produced for the now-defunct OTT Florida 24 Network, but WTKR later adapted them and is the only station to use them. They switched the voiceover out from Jeff Laurence to Brian Lee along with the new open.
WTKR is doing the Scrippscast modular newscasts in most non-key timeslots, including 4.30am. The 5-7am, 5-6:30pm, and 11pm newscasts are live and fully produced out of the control room; the rest are all Scrippscasts with mostly recorded elements, though weather, traffic, and some anchor reads are live in most shows. However, the 4:30am newscast is entirely recorded with content from the previous pieced together and played out; this includes the quick intro recorded by Blaine Stewart (he had a different tie on at 5am) and weather taped the previous night.
A few stations are starting to remove the default bug the software program the Scrippscasts are played from (which has only the time) and add in the regular bug with time and temperature used on the fully live shows; WTKR is not one of those, so it's easy to tell on this station at least which are live and which are modular.
