Green lasers reveal for the first time how tiny water droplets in an aerosol plume from a flushed toilet drift to the ceiling of a lab and then across the room. The aerosols are capable of carrying any viruses or other pathogens that might have been left in the toilet bowl by a previous user, even after repeated flushings.
The new experiment, using green lasers in a lab, is the first to directly visualize what happens and measure the plume’s velocity and extent.
