July 27/2022 Summer Hike
Today we are hiking up to Black Prince Lake in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, in Kananaskis Country, Alberta Canada. The highlights of this trail include Warspite Lake, a beautiful waterfall, a high alpine meadow and of course Black Prince Lake, at the base of Black Prince Mountain. The trail is 11.8 kilometers with 733 meters of elevation gain.
First let me say that the hike from Warspite Lake up to Black Prince Lake Goes through PRIME GRIZZLY TERRITORY.
The trailhead is located at the Black Prince Day Use Area. The trail starts out fairly flat and is well defined. Soon you will cross a bridge going over Smith-Dorian Creek. The trail becomes a little wider and you start to go up gradually. At 1.1k you will reach a bench, the trail levels out for a bit, but then it starts to go down. Once again, the trail levels out and you will cross a second little bridge going over Warspite Creek. Now the trail will start and go up again. At 2.2k you will arrive at Warspite Lake. Take the trail on the right side to go around the lake. At 2.9k you will start heading away from the lake, and you will get into some very thick bush. I had my bear spray in hand going through here, and I was playing some music on a speaker. You literally can’t see what’s ahead of you. At 3.2k you will arrive at a boulder bed that you have to cross. There are cairns to guide you through this. From here you head back into the trees again. From here up to the waterfall is the prime grizzly territory. There have been numerous sightings of grizzlies in this area this year. Be aware. Now you will start to get a lot of elevation gain. The area then opens up and is full of beautiful wildflowers, and the trail gets steeper. As you climb don’t forget to look back. At 4.2k you will arrive at the waterfall. I had a nice break to cool off and enjoy the waterfall. You will go up the trail with the waterfall on your left. The trail then breaks away from the waterfall and gets steeper yet. At 4.8k the trail will start to level off again and you will enter a gorgeous high alpine meadow. I was surprised to see there was quite a bit of snow along the trail here. As you approach the rocks at the end of the meadow keep to the right. The trail was not well marked here, because of the snow, I used my App here. Soon you will be entering the Larch trees. You will now have one last very steep section to go up. You are very close now. At 6k you will have reached Black Prince Lake. A stunning high alpine lake. There was still quite a bit of ice on it. I continued along the right side of the lake with views in both directions. At 6.2k I stopped around the middle of the lake. I had the whole lake to myself. I stayed up here for about an hour and then headed back down. Make sure you have trekking poles with you. It made the descent of the steep sections a lot easier. This was definitely my most spectacular summer hike this year. Its not an easy hike, but it was a magical hike.
