100 Insurance Questions in 100 Days
Steve examines the definition and benefits of No-Fault coverage on a New York auto insurance policy.
“What is no-fault insurance, otherwise known as personal injury protection, on my auto policy?”
Every policy in New York State comes standard with $50,000 in what is considered to be “no fault” or personal injury protection benefits. That means regardless of who was at fault in the accident, each person goes back to their own insurance company for medical expenses first.
Every policy, like I said, comes with $50,000. You can increase that up to a total of $175,000. With it come certain benefits in addition to the medical payments, but the primary portion of the personal injury protection is to pay for any medical expenses that are related to an auto accident, again, regardless of who was at fault.
If you happen to get into an accident with someone else or you happen to slide off the road and go into a ditch and need medical attention, you go back to your own insurance company first. It might be a good idea sometimes to take a look at it and see if it might make sense to increase that level of coverage beyond the basic $50,000.
