I decided to install the new cylinder liners in my Perkins 4-236 diesel engine today. The weather was nice for a change so I got to it. it is simple if the cylinders are clean and burr free. I used an abrasive wheel from 3M to clean up the cylinder walls because they had some rust on them. The wheel is one suited for paint removal and light rust but it can take metal off if you leave it in one place too long. Once cleaned up enough I used a light lubricant spray to help ease the liner into place. I used a small sledge hammer and a piece of Ash 1x6 as a liner/sleeve guard to ensure no deformity. It is important to ensure the liner goes in as square as possible so it doesn't get cracked or misshaped. Check it after the first few whacks for alignment and adjust as needed either by hand or whacking on the side that needs to go down to square things up. My liners have a lip on them for the head gasket to seal against. I say at the end that I'm going to set up for the jack but I tried to whack the liner in and it went with minimal fuss so I continued with this method. I was gong to use a bottle jack with a 5000lb capacity to do the press portion.
