Imagine a terrorist walked into the room right now, threatening you with a weapon. Your sympathetic nervous system—the fight, flight, or freeze mode—would get activated: fear, anxiety, elevated heart rate and blood pressure, panic.
Your inner critic is like that terrorist. Only this terrorist lives inside you, torturing you. By increasing your heart rate and other measures of sympathetic activity, it wears down your physical and mental health over time.
Ironically, you play the role of both the persecutor—the terrorist—and the victim—your own poor self.
Luckily, you can deprogram this. Here’s how👇
💗Learn to handle the inner terrorist: Remember that whatever you become aware of loses its power over you: it no longer owns you. This is true of your inner terrorist or any self-destructive internal program that we’ll discuss in this book. What you see can’t hurt you.
💗Self-compassion: Treat yourself as you would a dear friend. Be mindful of your emotions. Feel them but don’t feed them.
💗Your secret weapon: If you feel yourself going down a rabbit hole of self-criticism or self-loathing or are in a difficult situation, ask yourself: What do I need right now?
💗Have the courage to set boundaries: Saying no can be challenging, and people may not respond positively. It takes courage, but practice saying no. The more you do it, the more it becomes second nature and the braver you will be.
