Unusual Mating of Greater Vasa Parrots or Black Parrots
The Greater vasa parrot or Black parrot (Coracopsis nigra) is a black-colored parrot native to Comoros, Madagascar, Mayotte, and Seychelles. they are a rare birds in captivity. They inhabit the mangrove swamps and evergreen forests of Madagascar and the Seychelles Islands. They eat seeds, blossoms, and fruit especially berries and mangos. During courtship, the female may shed the feathers on her head giving it a yellowish tone. The male's beak is Normally black, but changes to white when they come in breeding condition, and in the breeding condition you can see the cloaca swells up and shown as greatly enlarged and protruding cloacal tissue, typical of this species and very alarming if never seen before!
Lesser vasas mate while sitting next to each other instead of the male sitting on the female's back. Copulations with Vasa Parrots can be either short (just a couple seconds like most birds) or long (30 minutes to 2 hours) wherein the male and female are locked together. Lesser vasa eggs hatch at 14-15 days and in another 33-35 days later the youngsters leave the nest box.
