Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Deputy Premier Christine Elliott, Long-Term Care Minister Dr. Merrillee Fullerton and Associate Minister for Small Business and Red Flag Reduction Prabmeet Sakaria, held a briefing on Monday to give an update on COVID-19 and the provincial response.
Ford addressed the people who went to Trinity Bellwoods Park on Saturday, where it was estimated up to 10,000 people were there, urging them all to get tested, as well as anyone who has been in large gatherings. He also said that despite Toronto having the largest number of cases, he wasn’t going to consider a regional approach just because of an “odd group” out of the entirety of Toronto.
Elliott said that the recent increase of case numbers was related to Mother’s Day weekend, despite that people should not have been in groups of more than five. She said the numbers expected in the days to come will likely reflect the period of reopening and they would monitor to make decisions on next steps for the province.
The health minister also said while there had been discussions of increasing the number of people in social gatherings, due to the increase of cases and incidents like the large crowd at Trinity Bellwoods this past weekend, the increase has been delayed. She said there’s concern of people creating groups that are too large and the numbers will need to come down further before it’s implemented.
Fullerton also spoke about the province’s decision to appoint two local hospitals to manage two care homes for 90 days, saying the reason was due to Downsview Long Term Care in Toronto and River Glen Haven Nursing Home in Sutton, Ont. both still seeing struggles in stopping the spread of COVID-19.
As of Monday, there were 404 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total confirmed cases to 25,904. There were also 29 new deaths, bringing the death toll to 2,102.
Ford also said a new detailed testing strategy targeting specific sectors would be unveiled this week.
