"You gotta keep doing what you want to do, bro," K$upreme advises. "The key to this thing is stay yourself… Don't follow the trends either. Tryin' to get on quick copying the next man's stuff don't work. Do you."
And he should know about that. K$upreme has been doing him from day one. After meeting Yachty in 2013 when he was attending Kennesaw State University in Georgia, the teenage talent with a flair for fashion-particularly vintage Supreme-made his first song, "Kush Bag," the very next day. Since that day he has become an integral part of a seismic shift in the sound of rap via projects like 'Flex Muzik.'
"Times is changin', bro," he said during a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ. "Think about it like this: 'Tupac and Eazy-E, they wasn't making music like 50 Cent. I feel like every generation changes. The next generation ain't gonna make music like now. When your time is over just chill."
He's not bothered by critics who dismiss his work as "mumble rap" and use the term "SoundCloud rapper" derisively. "Honestly, I don't know what a SoundCloud rapper is no more," Preme says in his Open Space interview. "The SoundCloud rappers are getting the checks. XX-is he a SoundCloud rapper? He goin' crazy. Trippie Redd goin' crazy. The SoundCloud took over!"
Expanding his skillset, K$upreme learned to make beats back in 2014, although he keeps most of them for himself. "I don't really be givin' my beats out," he says, although he's made exceptions for Chief Keef, Rich Kidd, Yachty, and Duwap Kaine. "My beats be sounding similar to the ones Sosa be makin'," K$upreme says, giving props to the influential Chicago artist.
"Chief Keef, he an inspiration," says K$upreme. "Rappers don't be givin' credit, but Sosa influenced this whole generation. This whole thing goin' on right now, Sosa made that up. He was the first one making videos in his crib-no budget. Everyone that's popping' right now was offa Sosa. You can hear it in everybody's music."
Check out the latest episode of Open Space for a preview of what's in store on 'Flex Muzik 2.' As the K$upreme puts it, "I'm tired of my non-fans telling me I can't rap. So I'ma show them some different stuff."
