Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food is a Netflix film released in August 2023, directed by Stephanie Soechtig. The film reveals the disturbing truth of foodborne illnesses with potentially deadly consequences in the US food supply.
If you're a living human being who eats food, which I imagine you are(!), poisonous bacteria contaminating your food and causing outbreaks of disease is something I'd imagine you'd be concerned about. If that's correct, watch the video for my review and summary of the shocking film, Poisoned.
This issue hits close to home for me, because I'm a food scientist, I worked for years in industry making new products and doing my best to make them safe for people to consume. Food is such a vital part of our lives, and seeing unsafe food is something that really bothers me, you know? That's why I think sharing the message of this film is so important - so you and your family can stay safe.
The film illustrates how foodborne illness is still a major problem that makes people sick and even takes lives, with 48 million people getting sick from foodborne illnesses each year in the US, according to the CDC. It takes us through multiple examples of pathogenic outbreaks caused by bacteria like E Coli, salmonella and campylobacter. And crucially, Poisoned shows us where these bacteria come from and how they end up contaminating our food.
It turns out a wide variety of foods can be a carrier for dangerous bacteria, including expected culprits like ground beef and chicken, but also many unlikely candidates like cantaloupe melons, romaine lettuce, spinach, infant milk formula and peanuts.
The documentary features interviews with food industry experts, scientists, as well as people personally affected by foodborne illnesses, including parents of children killed by E coli infections. It makes for fascinating, but visceral viewing.
